GPT-5 has landed

Your weekly guide to staying human in an AI world

Hey Conscious Church Fam

OpenAI dropped GPT-5. Elon rolled out his own AI video generator. Google unveiled a “world model” that feels like something out of Minecraft on steroids. And in the background, AI is starting to tune in to human wellbeing in new ways.

In today's recap:

  • 🎥 xAI launches Grok Imagine AI video generator

  • 🫂 ChatGPT gets mental health safety updates ahead of GPT-5

  • 🌍 Google DeepMind unveils Genie 3 interactive world model

  • 🧠 OpenAI finally launches GPT-5

💭 Josh’s Musings

This week was all about digital extremes and honestly? I loved every minute of it.

Spent time coaching some churches on finding their core 'scent' (remember that from last week?) - basically helping them figure out who they really ARE and how to let that shine through everything they do online. Whether it's a tiny congregation of regulars or a bigger community, the tools might be different but the heart is always the same. There's something that never gets old about hearing the genuine passion behind what these leaders are doing.

So here's where my brain went after that whole GPT-5 launch...

I'm actually ready to cancel my ChatGPT subscription. Not because I'm mad about their latest release (though it did feel pretty underwhelming). Someone said it reminded them of Apple launches after Steve Jobs died, and that really stuck with me.

I think we might be watching the beginning of the end for OpenAI's run at the top. They've become a product company focused on making ChatGPT the household name. But look at what others are doing - Google's tackling real problems with Genie 3 and AlphaEarth, xAI's building toward something bigger, and don't sleep on Meta quietly doing their thing.

Here's the weird part though: I'm still paying for ChatGPT because my whole workflow lives there. All my custom GPTs, my projects, the way it remembers things, even how I create images - it's all set up just how I like it. The interface feels like home, you know? Even though I'll be the first to admit Claude gives me better answers.

So yeah, I'm loyal for now, but it feels like borrowed time.

The real question isn't whether I'll eventually switch - it's just figuring out when better results finally outweigh the comfort of familiar systems.

What about you?

LATEST NEWS

Recap: Elon Musk’s xAI has rolled out Grok Imagine, an AI tool that turns a simple prompt or image into a 15-second video with audio. It’s now live for all SuperGrok and Premium+ X subscribers on iOS, marking xAI’s official step into AI video creation.

The Details:

  • Generates images from text, then animates them into stylised videos

  • Produces cinematic clips faster than many rivals, Elon claims up to 4× faster than some image models

  • Auto-generates fresh content as you scroll

  • Quality still feels “AI-generated” compared to the most polished tools, but Musk says it will improve daily

Conscious Take: This is Elon being Elon, moving fast, making it public, and letting the world test it in the wild. It’s not yet in the same league as Runway or Google Veo, but its playful, unfiltered style will resonate with some. As with all unfiltered AI, though… expect a few surprises along the way.

Recap: In the lead-up to GPT-5, OpenAI is upgrading ChatGPT’s ability to recognise signs of mental distress and respond appropriately, with a focus on promoting “healthy use.”

The Details:

  • New evaluation rubrics to flag distress and direct users to evidence-based resources

  • Built in collaboration with physicians, human-computer interaction experts, and advisory groups

  • Adds “nudges” to avoid unhelpfully long chats and encourages reflection in high-stakes situations

  • Aims to reduce cases where the model misses signs of delusion or dependency

Conscious Take: This is an important step. AI is increasingly part of people’s daily processing, and sometimes their private struggles. It’s not a replacement for real, human connection, but better safeguards are welcome. Definitely could be worth chatting in small groups, young adults etc on the topic of how people are using AI, to better understand how it’s being used in a personal setting.

Recap: DeepMind’s Genie 3 can turn a single text prompt into an explorable, interactive 720p world—complete with real-time physics and consistent characters—at 24fps.

The Details:

  • Worlds adapt instantly to user actions, maintaining visual memory for up to one minute

  • Users can drop in new characters, objects, or change the environment dynamically

  • Uses rapid “trajectory” calculations to keep the world coherent in motion

  • Potential applications range from gaming to training embodied AI in “what if” problem-solving

Conscious Take: It’s like Minecraft meets Pixar, but with AI generating the rules and scenery in real-time. Beyond fun, this opens doors for simulation-based training. Google is building some really cool AI products for real world problem solving.

Recap: OpenAI’s GPT-5 has officially arrived—replacing the jumble of GPT-4 variants with a simpler, three-tiered model family. It’s faster, smarter, and now available to free users (with limits).

The Details:

  • Three variants: GPT-5, GPT-5 Pro ($200/mo), and GPT-5 Mini

  • GPT-5 Pro uses extended “thinking” for deeper, more complete answers

  • GPT-5 Mini kicks in when free/Plus users hit their usage cap

  • Improved honesty, reduced hallucinations, and smarter task routing

  • State-of-the-art scores across coding, writing, maths, and medical benchmarks

Conscious Take: This is OpenAI resetting the board, one flagship model for all, rather than a messy lineup. Everyone now has a PhD-level assistant in their pocket.
